Hi

I am going to see a specialist at some point (choose and book) but have another question!

Can anyone help please?

Does the surgeon look at your hands and wrists and properly examine you and do they order more xrays/ scans etc?

I am sure I have ruptured tendons etc- they will know this by feel Im sure and also the "wonky" look in general.

I also know ALL about the bone errosion.

OOOOWWWWW!

what do they do when you go for first appointment?

Hi Jenni i can only tell you what happened with my knee surgeon but would think it was the same for your hands too, had to go and have a few x rays done then waited for them to come back and then back in to see surgeon , he then pointed out on x ray the bone touching the bone and told me my knee was basically knackered and i needed a replacement, i was so shocked that i didn't ask all the questions that i wanted to , he then sent me down to get some blood tests and swabs done , i was in hospital all day and had to arrange for some one to get my son from nursery , make sure you write any questions down,
I will be very interested what he says to you as my knuckles are bad too , hope every thing goes well

Hi Jenni,

Good question!

I've got my first appointment with the surgeon on the 1st of March. OT and Rheummy have said I'm going to need surgery on my right hand to halt loss of function. I'm finding the thought quite daunting as there is a long receovery with hands apparently. Might not fit in with looking after two children on my own Blink

Looking forward to seeing what others have to say.

Joanna

HI Jenni,
When I saw the hand surgeon it was much the same as Sophie with her knee.
I had X-rays done, then he explained them to me and said he would replace two finger joints and described the procedure.
I am putting it off as long as possible because I would find it too difficult having my right hand in plaster for four weeks. He did say he will "get me in the end" but we'll see.
Good luck with your appointment.

Love, Doreen xx

My surgeon experiences have been the same ............ x-rays on arrival, see the surgeon, he goes through the x-rays with me on computer screens, points out damage and then discusses surgical options. Either agree to go on waitiing list there and then, or decide to wait and see, but phone for a sooner appointment, if required.

Unique in this as well Jenni! I know you are poorly at the moment but did they give you a date for the NHS hospital? Hope they did and you don't have to chase this up yourself.

Im sorry to say the RA here is not behaving by any stretch of the imagination. PLus the bloods have gone off on a bender (without permission from me I might add!Huh )

Hi Jenni

So sorry to hear that you are having such a tough time of things.

I've had replacement wrist surgery and thumb fusion both of which followed a similar pattern quoted by others. The main difference being apart from the usual X-Rays I also had an MRI scan of my wrist which gave a more detailed picture of what was going on. Think this is often used in conjunction with X-rays when there is the possibility of tendon / ligament damage as well as bone disease.

I'm waiting for further surgery as my right hand is way out of line but like Doreen I'm holding fire as long as possible! I had a fairly quick recovery with the thumb, despite the pins and 6 weeks of plaster but the wrist replacement was a different kettle of fish entirely.

Fingers crossed you are able to get a fairly speedy appointment at least to get some idea where you may be headed on this. Good luck. Hope you start to see some improvement in the RA soon; you seem to heave been having a hard time for so very long.

Take care Jenni,

Lyn x

Hi Jenni, I had surgery on my hand a few years ago. All went fine but check out the after care. I found OT's much more helpful than physios. Jean

Hi Jenni, I have had both my wrists fused, but they are beginning to bother me a bit now, but my fingers are so bad they won't do them. I am having my elbow joint re replaced shortly, then revision surgery on my left knee and my right ankle re - fused. I am in so much pain at the moment my pa's are worried to death about me. Still its only pain my friend. I daresay it will go away soon. Gwenda xxxx

Gwenda,

I am so sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. Lets hope that the operations can go ahead and that they are successful and infection free.

Hi Jenni,

Hope it goes well on Thursday. The thought of having to have surgery on your hands and wrists is really scary but if it's necessary, it may go on to help in the long run.

Let us know how you get on.

I know you have had such a lot on recently Jenni but I wouldn't put off the appointment. If the hand/wrist specialist is worth his salt he should have a good idea what the lumps and bumps are. I don't think he would attempt to recommend anything without properly knowing. Even though you might have some problems to tackle before he could actually treat you, he might still be able to give you some idea what your future options are - I hope so.

Do you think you will still go?
